Refugee Advice & Casework Service

About

RACS is a community legal centre, the only one of its kind in NSW, dedicated to providing free legal support to refugees and people seeking who live amongst us in our communities.

We assist financially disadvantaged people of all nationalities, ethnicities, religions, sexual and gender identities, including:

  • People on temporary visas seeking protection
  • Women who have experienced or fear domestic, family, gender-based or sexual violence
  • Members of the LGBTIQA+ community
  • Stateless people
  • Children who are seeking protection without their parents
  • Refugees separated from family members who are hoping to reunite in Australia
  • People in detention

Program donations fund:

This project provides refugee women and girls with access to free, confidential legal support, with interpreters where necessary, in a women’s only space (or via phone in lockdown). For vulnerable refugee women, disenfranchised and traumatised from experiences in their home country, and potentially from violent domestic situations, the provision of a safe, supportive space where they can discuss in confidence their visa and other legal concerns is empowering. Female lawyers will also refer on to caseworkers and other services including domestic and family violence or sexual assault counselling, family law assistance and support with AVO matters.

Project winner: ‘Best Project’, 2020 STARTTS Humanitarian Awards.
