About
Older Women's Network (OWN) is an organisation for older women, by older women which aims to empower women as they age. The organisation provides opportunities for older women to connect for wellbeing as well as to advocate for change. Currently, it's major focus is on ending homelessness of older women, as well as ending violence against older women (including in aged care).
It has 20 OWN groups across the state of NSW, all run by volunteers, which runs a range of activities. Its headquarters in Sydney is staffed by a small team which provides support to the volunteer group, as well as organises activities/events. It also puts out a fortnightly e-newsletter containing information relevant to older women which is distributed to members and interested supporters. OWN provides advice and information to the government both at the state and federal level, as well as to private corporations related to issues impacting older women. It also makes submissions and conducts studies/research. It works in partnership with other like-minded organisations to further its objectives to improve the status of older women.
Program donations fund:
Buy A Brick' is an OWN project to support the building of homes for older women who are homeless. These women make up the majority of calls for help received by the organisation.
OWN not only advocates for change at the policy level, but also fundraises to enable housing to be built. OWN NSW works with the Women's Housing Company on this project to house homeless older women.
